Top 4 Hangover Supplements
By: Rob MillerWhat are the best hangover supplements on the market?
At supplementcritique.com we are always on the lookout for new products to test and review.
Hangover supplements are a new category on the market and have only been around for a few years.
The market is booming as people are realising that these supplements can support recovery after a night of drinking.
As a result, there are several products on the market to chose from so we thought its the ideal time to try out the best on the market today.
Naturally we were excited to share our experience with these supplements.
We were certainly surprised at how effective they are.
So how do hangover supplements work?
To understand how these pills work, it’s important to cover how hangovers effect your body in the first place.
Alcohol is broken down by your liver and produces toxic waste products.
These are commonly known as “free radicals” which are highly reactive molecules that damage the cells they come into contact with.
As a result, hangovers cause symptoms including headache, nausea, body aches and reduced focus.
Hangover supplements are designed to work by increasing your livers ability to break down alcohol as well as providing your body with antioxidants to clear up those free radicals.
They are somewhat different to most of the supplements we are used to as you’re meant to take them only when you’re drinking.
It’s also absolutely essential that they are taken at the end of your night (i.e after your last drink).
This is so that the ingredients in your hangover supplement can work before the toxins from alcohol metabolism cause damage.
Once its morning time and you’re already hungover – it’s too late.
Why we chose to cover these supplements?
We decided to cover hangover supplements because we know exactly how it feels to be a few steps off the mark after even a few drinks.
Lack of focus, energy and motivation can get in the way of an active lifestyle and anything that can take the edge off is a big plus for us.
The whole point of these supplements is to reduce alcohols negative effects so you can be more productive with your day.
The expected benefits of a quality hangover supplement:
- Reduce symptoms of nausea
- Improve mental clarity and productivity
- Increase energy levels
- Reduce morning headache
What are the key ingredients in a hangover supplement?
Dihydromyricetin (DHM): This ingredient is extracted from the Japanese raisin tree and has been used traditionally in Asia for thousands of years to help with hangovers.
Recent research has shown that DHM can increase alcohol breakdown and support your liver in clearing toxins.
Ginger Extract: This is the most research backed natural anti-sickness remedy that exists.
Its a great ingredient to have to settle those upset stomachs after a night of drinking
Milk Thistle: People commonly take milk thistle on its own and see real reduction in hangover symptoms.
Imagine combining it with other hangover busting ingredients.
Turmeric: Works as an anti-inflammatory so its ideal for hangover headaches.
B-Vitamins: These vitamins are essential in building your livers key regenerative enzymes so they are the foundation of any hangover remedy.
N-Acetyl-Cystine (NAC): This amino acid is the precursor to glutathione which is known as the bodys most powerful antioxidant.
It helps clear up the toxic by-products of alcohol breakdown.
Hangover supplement ingredients to avoid:
Caffeine: Although it may seem logical, caffeine will only give you a short lived energy boost when hungover.
Ultimately it will result in a caffeine crash as well as worsening any shakes you may have.
Ibuprofen / Advil: Although these painkillers can be great at reducing your headache, they are well known to irritate the stomach lining causing worsening symptoms of nausea when hungover.
In our top pick, we only include supplements with natural ingredients and ones that don’t contain stimulants for the reasons mentioned above.
#1 Hangover Supplement: AfterDrink

Our favorite hangover supplement are those that contain all the most important ingredients mentioned above as well as a clean all-natural formula.
As a result, AfterDrink is our top pick right now.
Their formula is unique in that they combine the antioxidant power from four nutrient categories (amino acids, herbal extracts, vitamins and minerals) so that hangover symptoms are targeted from all angles.
Here’s a snapshot of the ingredients label:
In addition, AfterDrink does not use a proprietary blend and all ingredients and doses are clearly labelled on their bottle.
How do you take AfterDrink?
You take 3 capsules before you start drinking and a further 3 capsules at the end of your night
Where To Buy
You can find AfterDrink on their official website, www.AfterDrink.com. A one month supply will run you about $35, which includes free shipping.
#2 Hangover Supplement: Detoxx For Hangovers
Detoxx from Leslabs is one of the first hangover supplements to come on the market. It has a strong foundation with most of the ingredients that are included in AfterDrink.
They have a great reputation with a solid customer base.
We actually think it’s a well formulated product with most of the key ingredients.
Here’s a snapshot of the ingredients label:
That said, there is a notable omission of Dihydromyricetin (DHM) which is really the main ingredient in this kind of product.
It’s hard to compete with the best products on the market without this key ingredient.
On the flip side, it’s one of the cheapest products on the market at only $20, you get a lot for your money.
How do you take Detoxx for hangovers?
In the same was as AfterDrink, you take 3 capsules before going out and 3 and the end of your night.
#3 Hangover Supplement: Cheers (formerly Thrive)

Another great option, Cheers (which used to be called Thrive) is one of the most
popular supplements on the market.
It contains DHM and most of the key ingredients required to mitigate the effects of a hangover.
Here’s a snapshot of the ingredients label:
While it does contain most of what we are looking for, we deducted points due to its omission of turmeric which is an important anti-inflammatory.
That said, Cheers is still a top product and makes it on the podium.
How do you take Cheers?:
You take 2-4 capsules after your last drink.
#4 Hangover Supplement: Flyby
Flyby is a relatively new company and has been growing since launch by expanding its range away from hangover supplements to rehydration drinks as well.
We were disappointed to see that Flyby uses a proprietary blend. This means that we don’t know exactly how much of each ingredient they have used in their product.
On top of this, they miss out ginger and turmeric in their ingredient list which is a shame.
Here’s a snapshot of the label:
Don’t get us wrong, Flyby still contains some really essential ingredients, but we believe all areas need to be covered when it comes to hangovers.
How do you take Flyby?:
3 capsules before bed and 3 at the end of your night – notice a trend?
Anything else to consider?
It’s important to note that hangover supplements aren’t magic pills.
Common sense still applies.
Keeping hydrated as well as eating a full meal before drinking.
These are key preparatory steps that you need to take to avoid the worst hangovers.
Conclusion
Our list is made up of the top hangover supplements on the market today.
Its’ a new breed of supplement with most manufacturers updating their ingredient list regularly to keep ahead of the game.
With that, we concluded that AfterDrink is the best hangover pill around.
We’ve based this on personal experience, company reputation and most importantly, quality of their formula with no hidden proprietary blends.
